Personal profile

Fiona Chatteur (née Kerr) is a high calibre Research Fellow with experience in design thinking and innovation. Successfully founded two research centres for Torrens University, The Centre for Research in Education (CRED) and the Design and Creative Technologies Research Centre (DACT). PhD research into design patterns for e-learning, with the aim of facilitating learning by embedding pedagogical theories into screen design and interaction. Thirteen years teaching digital media, web, visual effects, 3D animation, design theory, project management and film and TV studies to tertiary students.

Over 20 years of professional experience in media and digital media production, including twelve years in ABC TV production, six years international experience in websites and e-learning with the BBC, three years in 3D modelling and animation for gaming. HTML scripting and research programming experience.  Professional highlights include working on the web team for the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft landing on Titan, winning the Royal Television Society Educational Television Awards Lifelong Learning and Multimedia Award, winning the Grand Prix Japan The Maeda Prize, presenting at the 8th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies and having 42,000 respondents for the BBC’s Child of Our Time “Who Am I” interactive survey, breaking a UK record. Other highlights include being a finalist in two categories for the Webby Awards and being part of the Walkley and Logie award winning team for the Lateline TV programme.

Research interests

Further developing design patterns into the areas of design and interaction, design thinking, virtual reality, 3d modelling and e-learning. Investigation of the interaction between design and meaning – examining how designers make decisions in their design thinking, be it font choice, colour choice, hierarchy or other design decisions.
