Research Profile
I am a public health sociologist who researches how social, political and commercial forces shape people’s health. I seek to generate evidence that can be translated into real‑world policy and practice to design environments that will improve health equity over short- and long-term timeframes. I have a strong focus on amplifying people's lived experiences through research so that they can inform policy development, and therefore am committed to the development of innovative methodologies that build partnerships with priority populations for health risks, advocacy groups, and policy makers.
My research moves across a wide range of social determinants of health, including gender, emotions, time, workplace conditions, parenting, workforce development, service access, and financial precarity. I work with poststructural feminist theories to highlight the impacts of shame, unhappiness and distrust in relation to population health outcomes. My background as an Occupational Therapist positions me well to understand the complexities of people's lives and how this impacts their health and wellbeing.
I won competitive funding for my PhD from the National Health and Medical Research Council (Allied Health Priority Stipend, $113,963). I am an Editor for BMC Women’s Health (a Q1 journal), serve on the Allied Health Clinical Advisory Council for the Adelaide Primary Health Network, and am regularly invited to lecture students in allied and public health fields.
