As essential workers in improving public health outcomes, this paper provides a comprehensive review of studies examining the different perspectives on the work, conditions, and role of FVHW and identifies under researched areas relative to education, training and career prospects. A future education and training agenda based on the review is outlined, along with recommendations for improving current education and working conditions in order to increase the short- and long-term outcomes of successful public health programs.
