Abstract
This paper sets out to examine three issues. First, using a sample of the 27 listed companies in Hong Kong, it examines the public reporting of HR issues to discover what this reveals about the functions normally attributed to HR managers in large listed Hong Kong organizations. Second, it reports on the interviews conducted with senior executives from a sample of these listed companies regarding the required attributes of HR managers. The third section discusses the challenges and processes for improving competencies of HR managers through professional education in Hong Kong.
