Abstract

Despite online education growing enormously in recent years, many course types are not yet being commonly and optimally offered in online formats. There are therefore pioneering opportunities for the overcoming of real or perceived barriers to the development of these types of online courses. Courses that have real or perceived barriers to their successful online implementation include performance-based and creative courses, clinical courses, and courses with substantial research components. This chapter describes how these types of courses can successfully overcome online education expansion barriers and provides potentially transferable examples of the successful development and implementation of each of these course types and associated online resources. The chapter also describes an approach that could help online teaching and learning be successful across course types: the use of behavior change principles and practices.
