Inbound and Outbound Logistics in Supply Chain Management: Building Efficiency and Resilience

Logistics, the sector leading the way toward global supply chain transformation, is influenced by the forces of technology, sustainability imperatives, and growing demands of modern businesses. Building on this foundation, the present chapter discusses the important roles, the associated challenges, and the emerging trends in logistics, bringing out why logistics is key to efficient, resilient, and responsible operations. In addition to the challenges of globalization, technology, and sustainability issues, it first gives a summary of the essential logistics functions, including inbound and outbound operations, inventory management, and distribution. The chapter examines how advancements are changing logistics to make it more effective, less expensive, and more transparent via the prism of enablers of technology, including blockchain, robotics, IoT, and artificial intelligence. Finally, the development of automation in last-mile deliveries and warehouse management, as well as how drones and driverless cars are transforming the conventional logistics process, is discussed. The chapter tries to cover the aspect of sustainability by discussing on green logistics practices, renewable energy adoption, and reverse logistics systems focusing on reducing environmental impact. The chapter also emphasizes logistics’ supporting role in building supply chains that are robust, flexible, and sustainable—a forward-looking development.
