Abstract
This design based research has been conceived as a “working paper” or work in progress in a preliminary development stage.
This design based research working paper utilizes what is understood as service learning. Within the context of this paper we refer to this as a “live project” which in this instance is based upon a contemporary social issue. We are trying to understand how design students identify opportunities for Innovation and Creativity within a design process or methodology. In particular, during the typical design based research process of problem identification, definition and solving. The aims and objectives are to assist students and others for that matter in the identification of opportunities for innovation.
For this preliminary design based research exercise two design course teaching methodologies are used. The project in these courses is a real social issue introduced to consider environments, habitat & structures and so on in relation to the need for design of long term refugee camps of the future.
The hypothesis is to try to better understand and discover ways to measure opportunities for innovation and the potential effectiveness or impact of Innovation and Creativity upon design concept outcomes.
