Abstract

Within the wider literature, people with disabilities who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) have been recognised for experiencing ‘double discrimination’ due to their minority status within an ableist and heteronormative society. This ‘double discrimination’ status has however recently been debunked, given the fact that people with disabilities who identify as LGBT+ experience multiple layers of concurrent discrimination, some of which are yet to be reported and explored further within the academic discourse. Without discounting the credible work of existing scholars, there continues to be a dearth of research exploring intersectionality between disability and LGBT+ identities. Intersectionality, a theoretical framework founded by legal scholar Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, has been used to explore the interconnected and multiplex nature of discrimination and how these factors shape and inform the experiences of those marginalised and oppressed deriving from minority groups.

This chapter is aimed towards young LGBT+ people with disabilities between the ages of 16 to 25. Two autobiographical accounts will be referred to, contributing to the bulk of this chapter and as a way of providing a deeper insight into the lives of young LGBT+ people with disabilities. The discussion within the chapter also aims to support development at a policy and practice level.
